SOUTHAVEN, Miss. - Championship action:
11s – Alex Garrett and the Jackson Coyotes held on in the seventh inning to claim a 14-13 victory over the previously unbeaten Maumelle (Ark.) Bulldogs to claim the title.
Garrett had to deal with the “international tiebreaker” rules, starting the seventh with a 14-12 lead, but the bases loaded and nobody out. He allowed the Bulldogs just one run in the frame to clinch the title.
Ryan Rolison went 2-for-3 and pitched three no-hit innings in the middle of a contest where both teams’ pitching was tested. Alec Hardin added two hits to the victory.
“We’ve had the same group together since they were 8-year-olds,” Coyotes’ coach Jimmy Carey said. “We went to the Elite 24 as a 9-year-old team and finished seventh, and I think we’re on the verge of a really good 2009 season.”
The Coyotes blasted the Germantown Mustangs 12-3 in the semifinals while Mamelle edged Rays Baseball 9-8.
The Mossy Oaks Jakes took the consolation title with a 17-11 win over the Mississippi Mustangs.
