South Oakland A's Next Generation of Catchers Like the football powerhouses, Alabama and Penn State, who have become known as “Linebacker-U”, the South Oakland A's organization, of Madison Heights, Michigan has developed a reputation for developing outstanding catchers. In addition to 17U Greg Fettes and 16U Brett Sunde, two of the nation's top catchers, who are now being recruited by many of the major D1 schools, the South Oakland A's has two more young catchers who are on track to be among the best in the nation. These are 14U Billy Malak and 12U Griffin Green.
14U -Billy Malak (standing left in photo) is a strong leader on the South Oakland A’s 14U 2010 team. He is a left hand hitter and catcher with strong skills that enables him to shut down opponent’s running games. He hits with power and had 9 homeruns during his 13U 2009 season. He also threw out 16 runners of his 21 attempts during the 2009 season. Billy is widely recognized by many coaches as one of the best defensive catchers in his age group as he has consistently shined against national level competition. Because of these strong skills, he was picked up by the Indiana Prospects to help them during this past season’s Disney’s Elite 32 season finale championship tournament. As Billy is now moving into his freshman year in school, he is expected to be an early starter on his high school Varsity team. Already, he is catching the attention of a number of college scouts.
12U- Griffin Green (standing right in photo) of the South Oakland A’s 12U Green 2010, is a great defensive catcher with outstanding blocking abilities. He is a great field general who threw out 20 runners in his 11 year old season. Griffin is a leader on the field and will make a difference for this year’s team. He is a very hard worker who is constantly looking for ways to get better everyday. At 12 years, he already stands at 5’5” player who is growing and will continue grow as he matures in the coming years. He is a power hitter who plays well above his age and he hit 6 home runs last year. An excellent field general. He is at that age where he will start to grow.
